The Pondera County Health Department has turned a simple idea into a meaningful community resource by using a $15,000 grant to create a Community Wellness Room - an intentionally designed, soundproof space that expands access to behavioral health support. In a rural area where distance, transportation, and limited provider availability often make care difficult to reach, the Wellness Room offers a safe, confidential environment for residents of all ages to attend telehealth therapy appointments or meet with providers in person when appropriate. More than a private room, the space is a flexible, multi‑purpose wellness environment equipped with tools that support comfort, connection, and whole‑person well‑being. Noise‑canceling headsets, a white noise machine, a TV and iPad for telehealth, VR technology for relaxation, a Vitamin D light, fidget tools, comfortable furnishings, mobile hotspots, and a versatile table that can seat up to 14 people all help create a calming, accessible setting. The department also built a simple online scheduling system through JotForm, allowing individuals to reserve appointment slots Wednesday through Friday and complete confidentiality forms in advance, making the room easy to use while protecting privacy. The impact of this space is already being felt. The Wellness Room has become a private space for 25 individuals a month so far. In one instance, an individual experiencing a behavioral health crisis came into the health department. Amy Shaw shared, "The Wellness Room provided a safe and private environment where staff were able to support the individual and connect them to 988, ensuring they received immediate, appropriate care." By listening to local needs and leveraging a relatively small investment, Pondera County has created a scalable model that strengthens behavioral health access, reduces stigma, and promotes community wellness in a way that fits the realities of rural Montana.
